The Culprits Must Be Punished

Recent rains in the country resulted in mass disaster in different parts of the country. Some northern provinces faced the catastrophe of floods that left thousands homeless, destroyed crops and left more than a dozen dead. The landslide in Badakhshan province brought unprecedented disaster in which thousands of people lost their lives and this sad incident was echoed in all corners of the world. When we come to the rains in major cities of country and especially in Kabul, the damage caused were not by the rain but the mismanagement and low-quality construction of roads.

In Kabul, the rain water created great frustration due to the absence of proper sewerage system. Different parts of the city that were comparatively low in level were soon flooded and the rain water entered the houses and buildings. The residents were busy in taking the rain water out of their houses while the roads were blocked for any kind of traffic that caused heavy traffic jams and great frustration was caused to the public.

Except for this temporary problem, it has also been noticed that many newly constructed roads were wiped away by the rain water and they appeared like those roads that were unpaved. With this, millions of dollars that were spent for the construction of these roads were also wiped away. Now, government will have to make fresh investment into these roads and large sums of public money will be spent for the reconstruction of these roads.

The concerned authorities were already warned that the quality of newly constructed roads was very low and they could never withstand many years. Usually, a well-built road is expected to remain stable and in good shape for at least two decades but unfortunately, the newly constructed roads in Kabul could not resist the wear and tear of even 3-4 years. It is a general perception that millions of dollars were bribed for getting these projects and the builders and government authorities are equally responsible for the poor quality of roads.

It is the call of public that both the constructors who built these roads and the government officials who granted the contracts to the builders and also approved these poor-quality roads should be arrested and trialed for their corruption. The money that they have plundered should be collected back from them and their property should be confiscated. Such a strict action would make sure that no other builder or government official should dare to play with the public assets.
