An Interesting Alliance

The coalition of Zalmai Rasoul and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah to some extent sparked pulses in Afghan political heart. Getting, around eleven percent of the entire vote in presidential election, Zalmai Rasoul was viewed as the favorite candidate of President Karzai. Before the election, many analysts believed that since he had the support of the palace, he would be one of the two forefront runners who had the chance to become the new president. Such concept was strengthened after Qayom Karzai, the elder brother of President Karzai called off the campaign and voiced out support for Zalmai Rasoul. His withdrawal from running the presidential election further strengthened the notion that something was going behind the palace curtain, perhaps a systematic engineering of the election for a particular candidate. However, President Karzai openly and often rejected any kind of hidden support or plot of interfering into the election in the favor of any particular candidate.

The unexpectedly low percentage of votes that Dr. Zalmai gained on April 5, presidential election did not put a dot at the end of notion.  He is still viewed as the only favorite presidential candidate that palace wanted to become as successor of President Karzai. Thus, when he joined hands with Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, many are confused that what is really going behind the closed door of Afghan politics?  (It should be noticed that Eimal Faizi, spokesman of Mr. President said that President Karzai had nothing to do with the new coalition and that was an independent decision of Zalmai Rasoul). How it is possible that President Karzai stretches hands toward Dr. Abdullah a former member of his cabinet and recent staunch opposition for making alliance? But it is not important to understand that whether Mr. President Karzai had something do with decision of Zalmai Rasoul or not but mere coalition of the two teams is of high importance.  Accept it or not, Dr. Rasoul is viewed as person who represents parts of the Pashtun community however he gained votes among other communities similar to rest of candidates.

Based on the conventional political analysis, he should have joined Ashraff Ghani Ahmadzai another leading candidate instead of Dr. Abdullah who represents the northern alliance. Now whatever is the reason behind, it reflects a major shift or changes in Afghan’s politics. If the process continues smoothly, communal lines will get blurred and cross communal alliances will get the chance to maneuver.
