Provincial Council Results Announced

The result of provincial council election was announced yesterday. For some it brought the message of dismay and tragedy but for others it was really cheerful news.

It was about to be announced 27th Sawr in Islamic calendar but finally announced with three days delay. The candidates have only twenty four hours to submit their complaints if they have any criticisms regarding the result of the election. In the provincial election was held together with presidential election on April 5th, totally 2713 individuals nominated themselves for the provincial members including 308 female. As the result reveals, totally 458 candidates succeeded to find way to provincial councils of their respective provinces from which 96 of them are female.

Though it is highly possible that Election Commission will face huge number of complaints from the candidates who deem themselves as winners but seemingly there will not be many changes to the result as witnessed in the primary and final result of presidential election. The number of people who took part was so high that could give the next government high level of legitimacy if similar level of turn-out be practiced in the second round of the presidential election.

Before the announcement of the result of the election one of the candidates was certain that he was winner. The reason was that he had the figure of total votes he gained and compared that to previous election. In the 2009 provincial election, candidates with less than one thousand five hundred votes found way to provincial council. But this time the last person who succeeded gained over 3700 votes in Kabul. It shows the turnout was good and satisfying and the competition among provincial candidates was so tough. Based on reports, over five hundred people nominated themselves for 34 seats of provincial council.  Many of them also spent huge amount of money for printing brochures, attractive large photographs, seminars and invitation of people to their houses and etc.

So, those who found way to the councils have larger supporters and each representing tens of thousands of people who voted for them. With such high level of votes, they can play far critical role in doing their jobs properly.  So, hopefully with majority of them being young generation, visible changes may occur in the council as well as in its activities.
