Poor Salaries of Teachers in Private Schools

In more than a year, there has been a considerable shrinkage in the economy. It all started when the international community announced to wrap up their projects and thus started firing their employees. Once the local market was facing the extreme shortage of suitable and qualified employees and now, large number of skilled and educated people, who once used to be the members of international donor agencies on extreme lucrative pays, are looking for jobs. In such circumstances, there has been considerable decrease in the number of vacancies available and also the average salaries have badly decreased.

The above scenario is true for most of the organizations but today, we would like to draw the attention of concerned authorities towards the meager salaries being paid for the teachers in private schools. There are thousands of private schools in all cities and major towns of the country and they have employed large number of teachers, majority of them included of female teachers. With the exception of a very few high standard schools that aim for the service to the community like Afghan-Turk Schools, almost all the schools are run like business entities solely for earning more and more profit.

With this intention, these schools try hard to collect more and more from the parents and make the least possible expenses. In this regard, students are deprived of proper facilities which are promised by these schools and teachers are hired who should accept the least possible salary. It is the reason why, most of the teachers are less qualified and lack proper experience. These teachers are not able to perform their duties properly and thus create a great risk for the fate of our coming generations. In the same way, there are many teachers who are experienced and well-qualified but because of the low salaries, they are compelled to find work in other places and they are also not able to teach with complete peace of mind.

The problem is not due to the lack of resources but because of the extreme greed of the school owners because these schools collect heavy fees from the parents but when it comes for the payment to the teachers, they start crying about the low income. It has been learnt from the informed sources that school owners or administrators earn thousands of dollars in a month from a school and this huge income is really surprising in this limited economy. The condition has degraded the value and respect of education and educators in the eyes of general public.

On the other hand, the overall standard of education has badly deteriorated in the private schools. Our ministry of education is also partly responsible for this as they are not able to make follow up of the actual income of schools and their payment plans for their teachers. Ministry of education is recommended to make a survey about the salaries of teachers in the private schools and take necessary steps to ensure that school owners should earn in a considerable portion and they should also transfer the benefits to the teachers and other stakeholders of the schools.
