The Second Round of Presidential Election

Few days ago, President Hamid Karzai once again asked people to take part in the second round of presidential election.  He said that high turnout will move the country forward. In his radio statements he makes every fifteen days, while greeting the high turnout of people said that the participation of people has improved the prestige of Afghanistan. “Despite security threats, participation of people in the 5th April elections reflected that Afghanistan is a people-ruled country where people are conscience of their rights”, he added.

Unlike the first round, now people will choose only between Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraff Ghani Ahmadzai who gained the highest percentage of votes in the first round.  Though Dr. Abdullah Abdullah overrode Dr. Ashraff Ghani, gaining around 45 percent of the total votes in comparison to 31 percent of Ashraff Ghani, but lack of an authentic survey and new alliances that both have made recently has set the result into vagueness. In such an environment, the election would turn much more interesting similar to the first round. The supporters of each candidate have their own reasons to worry as well as be hopeful of an ultimate victory. The traditional vote banks somehow have seen some changes.  On Friday, May 30, a group of elders who claimed to be the representatives of people from eastern provinces where otherwise Dr. Ashraff Ghani should have an indisputable dominance announced their support for Dr. Abdullah. And vice versa, Dr. Ghani in a trip to Herat province was highly welcomed and thousands of people made applause while he was talking about his plans for the future.

Hence, in the environment where no one can tell with certainty that who will be winner as well as visible ground change of trans-voting are the issues that have changed the upcoming election very interesting. The world and our foreign allies are closely watching the situation whether the expenditure of billions of dollars was a waste as officials of some neighboring countries claim or democracy really has found root as Kabul talks about.

Till now the process has moved smoothly. The high turnout in the first round sparked optimisms about the future both among Afghans as well as foreign officials. So, if people make such a historic participation, there would be a lot to celebrate particularly politicians learn to respect the decision of people.
