Release of Five Key Taliban Leaders

The release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the American soldier who was abducted five years ago by Taliban militants from near his base, has sparked discussions among different factions of society. Parts of American people are happy about the release of Mr. Bergdahl whose arrest and subsequent news about him in Taliban’s custody, particularly, the recent video clips released by Taliban showing him alive sparked huge sympathy in the United States. The civil movement started to convince American officials to yield to Taliban’s demands for the release of the soldier. As one placard wrote as “You fought for us and now fight for your release”.

Meanwhile, it is not clear really how much the sympathy for decision of government was effective. Because many are of view that such prisoner swap with terrorist groups like Taliban will further endanger the lives of Americans. Terrorist groups will try their best to abduct Americans and then ask for the release of key figures detained by US or its allies.  As some members of Congress criticized the prisoner exchange. Rep. Howard P. McKeon (R., Calif.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and Sen. James Inhofe (R., Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the means by which Sgt. Bergdahl's freedom was secured need to be examined. They said that U.S. adversaries now have a strong incentive to capture Americans.

Apart from such concerns, there are some other issues that need to be observed. All released Taliban prisoners were top leadership of Taliban. Some of them are blamed for committing crime against humanity and on the black list of United Nations like Mohammad Fazil Mazlom, ex-top commander of Taliban who was involved in battle in the northern Afghanistan and massacred thousands of Hazara community in Mazar-e-Sharif Province and Mullah Khairkhah.

Meanwhile, Kabul is happy about the measure. It does not consider that some criminals were set free that possibly will wreak havoc and encourage criminals to follow his steps. Rather baselessly assume that they will play important role in peace process. These individuals are related to the type of ideology that viewed murder of Hazara people as pleasure. Guantanamo bay prison is a jail not a university to teach modern values. Their release will give them the sense that they are the winners and can achieve their goals through Jihad. Hence, their release can be a sign of US discontent with President Karzai’s policies.
