Harsh Reaction of Tehran to ISIS’s Spectacular Successes

As the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) started posing direct threat to Baghdad, sweeping cities close to it, Tehran has announced resolve to stand beside the Iraqi government with full support and  all options on the table.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani cut short a religious celebration on Thursday and said he had to attend an emergency meeting of the country's National Security Council about events in Iraq."We, as the Islamic Republic of Iran, won't tolerate this violence and terrorism…. We will fight and battle violence and extremism and terrorism in the region and the world," he said in a speech.

Iran's chief of police, Esmail Ahmadi-Moghaddam said the National Security Council would consider intervening in Iraq to "protect Shiite shrines and cities," according to Iranian media. In the short-term, analysts said the outcome of the crisis in Iraq will only strengthen and increase the influence of Iran and the Revolutionary Guards. Based on some reports, Iran deployed Revolutionary Guards units to Iraq, according to Iranian security officials. Two Guards' units, dispatched from Iran's western border provinces on Wednesday, were tasked with protecting Baghdad and the holy Shiite cities of Karbala and Najaf, these security sources said.

In a fierce reaction, the spokesman of ISIS talked of capturing Karbela and Najaf, the two most holy cities for Shiites after Mecca and Medina. But still there is no news how the Shiites will react against capturing Samera, though a Sunni dominated city but it is holy for Shiites due to existence of a Shiite Imam’s shrine. As the Prime minister Nouri-al-Maliki talked of arming civilians to stand against Islamist Militias disappointed of the functionality of security forces on which billions of dollars spent, reports talk about gathering of Baghdad residents becoming volunteer to register names and deployed against the ISIS militants.

Till now the Iraqi officials have not shown any reaction to the news about the deployment of Iranian force but what is clear the more Mr. Maliki comes under the pressure the more he gets closer to Tehran. In addition, Iraq is of high importance for Tehran. As already said, it will use all options to empower it to fight Sunni Islamists who have the support of regional countries. Unlike the Syria as despite involvement, Tehran always rejected involvement but it does not fear to openly support Baghdad because the international community and Western countries might deep down also may like the ISIS get defeated which will pose danger to the global security.
