Fund for Democracy or Jihadists

In relative awkward measure, President Obama asked the US congress to approve $500 million to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels seeking to Oust President Bashar al-Assad. It can be a visible move of the White House after years of tattering at the edge of confusion how and to what extent it should support the Syrian opposition. Despite wide support among officials for Syrian opposition, White House still avoided sending arms, fearing they might be used against itself.

The White House said the money would help defend the Syrian people, stabilize areas under opposition control, facilitate the provision of essential services, counter terrorist threats, and promote conditions for a negotiated settlement. "This funding request would build on the administration’s longstanding efforts to empower the moderate Syrian opposition, both civilian and armed, and will enable the Department of Defense to increase our support to vetted elements of the armed opposition," the White House said.

Democrats in Congress said they were pleased Obama was taking a step to back the Syrian rebels. "It is not too late to help the moderate opposition. It is not too late to help Syrians build the future they deserve," said U.S. Representative Eliot Engel, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

Meanwhile, it fully understands worries surround the support. As an official has said that the Syrian rebels would be "appropriately vetted" before being given assistance, in what amounts to an effort to assuage concerns that some equipment provided to the Syrian opposition might ultimately fall into the hands of U.S. enemies.

Anyhow the tangible economic support that the White House is looking forward to oust President Assad or at least balance power in order to force him to negotiate with his opposition. Such huge financial support considering the public budget strains inside the country and advance of ISIL militants in Iraq reflect how much the US is committed to Syrian rebels. Though ISIL militants are also in fight with different Syrian rebel groups but wasn’t it Syria’s crisis that paved the way for its empowerment. Fueling the Syrian war would only increase radicalism in the region and would not help an inch to development of democracy. Therefore, with 500 million dollar that the US is giving as a support what it is really looking for? The continuous war in Syria will attract more Jihadists from across the globe as it has already turned sectarian. Thus, instead of developing a moderate alternative to Damascus government, the country is on the track towards becoming hub for jihadists.
