Presidential Candidates Should Put the Country First

As a part of the efforts of mediation of the government of the United States to finish the deadlock in the presidential elections, Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham paid a visit to Kabul. In this visit, they met the presidential fore-runners Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai. Later on, they had a press conference in Kabul which contained a lot of message for the intellectuals of Afghanistan.

The senators from Arizona and South Carolina made clear that the present political deadlock is very dangerous not only for Afghanistan but it would also negatively affect the future relationships between the two countries. Any kind of frustration in this regard would bring down the hope and interests of America from Afghanistan and would decide upon the nature and direction of cooperation that America would have with Afghanistan in future. They thus stressed that the government of Afghanistan and presidential candidates should do their best to bring an immediate end to this deadlock so that the country should resume its journey on the path of democracy towards economic prosperity and general development.

The above message from the two important representatives of the United States carries a lot of message for us. This message gains more importance having a look at the present scenario of Iraq where militants have succeeded in establishing their separate geographic entity and they are also trying to bring an end to the democratic government of Iraq. On the other hand, all the economic and political gains that were the results of the efforts of international community for over a decade have been lost and country is again in its worst turmoil. Due to these circumstances, Iraqi government and public started making the demand of the re-deployment of American forces for keeping the security.

Now that American president Obama has announced the gradual withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan in 2014 and then at the end of 2016, the future involvement of the government and forces of United States in Afghanistan is very crucial. Same points were brought into light by the two senators in their press conference by mentioning the future status of military bases owned and operated by American soldiers in Afghanistan. However, these relations are going to be adversely affected by the present uncertain political situation in our country.

It is needed that our government and both the presidential candidates should sit together to bring a peaceful and stable end for this problem so that the situation of the country should not only improve but its relations with the rest of the world especially the United States should also get better. This is in the best benefit of both the candidates as it is in the best benefit of the country and the countrymen.
