Concerns Regarding Election

Ultimately what worried Afghan people have appeared as real threat for the future political destiny. Before the announcement of runoff presidential election result and even before that many talked about the fair play of Afghan politicians. The high turnout of votes sparked hopes across the globe that Afghans have embarrassed modern values and would not let change into safe-haven for Taliban militants and terrorists groups anymore.

But one thing remained unnoticed. That was nothing other than the reaction of behavior of Afghan politicians. Threats, warning and force still have remained as acceptable means for grasping power no matter how Afghan civilians have gone far beyond that. Though part of the people are angry about revelation of vote-rigging in favor of both candidates but deep down none are ready to hold measures which possibly would plunge the country once again into chaos and instability.

The oft-repeated talk topic in editorial pages what would happen if presidential candidates do not accept the result of the election as experienced during previous elections. Almost in all three previous presidential elections, almost all candidates rejected the result saying that extensive vote-rigging had taken in the favor of this or that candidate. Unlike other countries where generally the defeated one(s) congratulate the winner and announce preparation to support the new government, in all three previous presidential elections and two parliamentary election none of the candidates did so.

All of them claimed that widespread fraud had taken place and their rights are snatched. I can vividly remember in 2009 when Dr. Ashraff Ghani and Dr. Abdullah nominated themselves for the presidential elections, Ashraff Ghani gained a very small part of votes and Dr. Abdullah gained visible percentage of votes which caused the election to go for the second round. But he withdrew on account of his distrust on election commissions. Back then in a television interview, Dr. Ashraff Ghani also claimed that election was transparent otherwise he could get far larger percentage of votes.

Similar problem we have now. Presently Dr. Abdullah claim that extensive vote-rigging have taken place in favor of his rival Dr. Ashraff Ghani. The deadlock does not seem to be ended easily. Even after the pressure of our international allies, he is not ready to accept the final result, the next government looks to be a government will poor legitimacy, which would in turn keep it ill-functioning.
