Ghor Tragedy Should be Dealt Seriously

Just days before the nation could have enjoyed the joyful moments of Eid, the incident of Ghor and then the resultant protest in Kabul left the minds of people badly polluted by the fears of insecurity and acts of our government. Almost all the media outlets showed that the tragic incident of Ghor was carried out by the Taliban militants who were released from a Ghor prison under the decree of presidential palace, as part of the policy of government to release Taliban members to build confidence and bring them on the table of negotiations.

According to the police chief of the province, the group that shot dead the people was lead by Qari Rahmatullah and Mullah Farooq, both Taliban activists who were released from a prison in Ghor. Police chief claims that after their release from the prison, these two leaders have assembled a force of almost 2000 militants and are disrupting the peace of the province by carrying out attacks on security forces in all parts of the province.

When this news was shown on the media, civil society activists gathered in Kabul to protest against the policies of government to release Taliban and demanded the government to take the responsibility of this sad incident and make a public apology from the victimized families.

On the other hand, president Karzai defended his policy of releasing prisoners from the national prisons and deemed it as an important part of his policy to bring Taliban on the table of negotiations and building trust between the two parties.

However, the sad incident of Ghor cannot be ignored and forgotten by few simple explanations and excuses. If government is honest in its claim to protect the lives of its citizens, then a proper follow-up of this incident should be carried out. It is requested that the president should himself take special interest in this case and build an investigative committee that should carry out proper investigation of this incident and in the light of the recommendations of this investigation, the culprits should be caught and brought into justice.

According to police chief, more than 2000 Taliban are busy in carrying out large scale operations against the security forces to disrupt the security of the province and if these claims are correct, government needs to immediately start a military operation in the area. In this operation, not only Qari Rahmatullah and Mullah Farooq should be caught and brought into justice but the security of the province should be controlled by our forces and the writ of government and rule of law should be practically implemented in the area.
