Misunderstandings, Clashes and Ambiguities Continue

After presidential runners signed an agreement, there were expectations that the process of vote audit would speed up and soon the people will have the pleasure of knowing the result; however, that does not seem to be happening at the moment. Still the supports of both the candidates have misunderstandings and even hatred for each other and even with the members of Election Commission. On Tuesday, once again, there was a clash during audit of the votes. The supporters of Dr. Abdullah Abdullah had some misunderstanding with the members of Election Commission, which then culminated into a clash. As a result of the clash around 4 members of Election Commission were injured.

United Nations Assistant Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemned the incident and UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Jan Kubis said, “The UN deplores the violence that took place. All parties – campaign teams, IEC, UN and observers – engaged in this important process must abide by relevant Codes of Conduct, and conduct themselves with professionalism and with high standards worthy of the millions of Afghans who cast their vote in the election. They must treat each other with respect.

Such incidents are really very unfortunate and show how immature our country is regarding the democratic processes. One of the most important requirements of a democratic system is patience and respect for others but that seems to be absent from our society completely. Earlier, the supporters of both the candidates had a clash as well which further invigorated the tense situation.

Apart from that there have been statements by the supporters of the candidates suggesting that the results would not be easily acceptable and there would be extra-constitutional measures to deal with the situation.
At this crucial juncture, it is necessary that the candidates, their supporters and the members of Election Commission must show complete efficiency and tolerance. All they require is to be focused on their tasks and must not deviate from it in any way. They have to respects others and most importantly the constitution of the country.

The United States has clearly warned that any extra-constitutional actions by any stakeholder in Afghanistan would cost the country the financial and security support of the United States.
