Corruption on the Rise

Afghanistan falls in the list of most corrupt countries of the world. Its people are sick of paying millions of Afghanis in bribes each year for receiving basic government services for which they are already paying in the forms various kinds of taxes. Bribery has turned into a culture in Afghanistan that can break almost all laws. Knowing that more than sixty percent of Afghan population is formed by poor people the trend to pay bribes will further press them economically.

Lack of oversight, low pays, low awareness about laws and high prices of basic necessities are deemed to be the major reasons for the corruption level to rise in the government offices. In the public eyes, the credibility of government is falling very swiftly. By living in Afghanistan, one can realize what 'corruption' really means.

At higher levels the condition of is worse. Reportedly, large number of ministers, deputy ministers, governors, other high authorities in government and parliamentarians are involved in corruption.

There is both domestic and foreign pressure on the government for not having achieved any significant success against the deep-rooted corruption in the national systems.

Nonetheless, the Karzai administration has no proper answer. In the government's point of view, foreigners are majorly responsible for vastly spread corruption, although it has failed to impart any sorts of evidences and it seems to have no control over the great number of contracts being executed by foreign organizations.

The foreigners can be responsible for the corruption but the government needs to clean itself first. In other words the government should not put its burden on the shoulders of others.

With deep corruption existing it its systems, it seems improbable for the government to successfully address serious problems like insecurity, weak governance, limited rule of law and other political, economic and social issues.

Until the law makers do not become the law protectors instead of law breakers, corruption and problems given birth by it will persist. It is high time for the government to curb the corruption in the country or it will have further awful consequence for us in the future.
