The Taliban Darkened the Light of a New Afghan Day

On the predawn of Wednesday, May 02, 2012, the US president Barack Obama said,"My fellow Americans, we've traveled through more than a decade under the dark cloud of war. Yet here, in the pre-dawn darkness of Afghanistan, we can see the light of new day on the horizon." After he left Afghanistan, the thick smoke from explosions carried out by the Taliban insurgents clouded the sky of Afghan capital.

Afghan people are grateful for the commitment from international community, in particular the United States of America. They are also happy to see a new strategic partnership agreement is signed between their country and some of its closest allies, such as the US.

But Afghan people continue to suffer from atrocious insurgency that has no mercy for children, women or civilians. It is therefore important to connect the rhetoric with ground realities. On Wednesday's suicide bomb attack, at least seven people were killed. The attack occurredin an area of eastern Kabul where many Westerners live and was followed by hours of fighting between insurgents and security forces.

President Obama's trip came on the occasion of Osama Bin Laden's death anniversary. He also stated that, "One year ago, from a base here in Afghanistan, our troops launched the operation that killed Osama bin Laden. The goal I set — to defeat Al Qaeda, and deny it a chance to rebuild — is now within our reach."

It was a good achievement as a lunatic fringe was eliminated but he was not the whole cause of suffering for Afghan people. The Taliban claimed the responsibility for Wednesday's attacks, saying that they carried it in response fo Obama' trip.

Speaking live from Bagram military base north of the capital, president Obama pledged to "finish the job" and end the Afghan war. But it should be said that the job must be finished the way Afghan people want and that could lead to peace, stability and prosperity in their country. In other words, the war must be finished by eliminating or defeating those who continue to "darken the light of a new day on the Afghan horizon."
