Increasingly Intrusive Role by Some Neighbors

Afghanistan appears to have been plunged into robust and intense competition with the neighboring countries. The neighbors have always defined their interests in conflict with a stabilized, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan. In order to meet their own national interests, they often do at the expense of the stability and peace in Afghanistan. In a recent intrusive role, the new Iranian ambassador to Kabul is reported to have asked the chairman of Afghan senate threateningly to refuse to endorse and approve the Enduring Strategic Partnership Agreement between Afghanistan and the United States of America.

Afghan senate protested against this remark and called on the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Iranian ambassador for explanations. It is said that Abul-Fazl Zohrawand, Iranian ambassador, has threatened that his country would expel Afghan refugees if the senate approves the agreement.

In the meanwhile, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has said that it will destabilize the region, saying that "Ambiguity about US military bases in Afghanistan and lack of transparency regarding the military role of US forces in the future have raised Iran's and other countries' concerns."

He called for complete withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan, adding "Iran believes that peace and stability in Afghanistan is possible with a complete withdrawal of ISAF troops, closure of any foreign military base in Afghanistan, and the start of Afghan-led peace negotiations. This agreement will not help stabilize Afghanistan but as the last decade shows, it could promote instability."

The fact is that the neighboring countries have always pursued a malicious policy towards Afghanistan to meet their own national interests. On the contrary, Afghan government has always worked to beg their cooperation in eliminating terrorism from the region while failing to pay attention to the fact that they use terrorism as a tool for the purpose of achieving their own interests with least regard to Afghan people's sufferings.

Afghan people have lost their trust in the two most intrusive neighbors but unfortunately they still have their agents in Afghanistan to work for their interests. The unfortunate thing is that they host millions of Afghan refugees and continue to pressurize them and use them as leverage when their malicious wishes are not fulfilled.
