New Trend: Afghan Soldiers’ Secret Alliance with Taliban

Amid withdrawal plan of US-led NATO forces from Afghanistan, dependency on Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) to tackle the future defense responsibilities of the country has increased. By the end of 2014, all security tasks of Afghanistan will be transitioned to ANSF. Nevertheless, serious concerns persist over the capability of these forces to fight growing insurgency with little or no support from the international forces. Apart from ANSF capability, growing attacks by Afghan soldiers on their foreign counterparts remain another worrying point.

Over the last few years, scores of US-led forces have been gunned down by rogue Afghan soldiers or insurgents disguised as them. If the trend goes uncontrolled, future training programs and coordination between international and Afghan troops will be greatly hampered.

Recently, another worrying practice by Afghan soldiers – secret alliance with Taliban – has been reported in the media. According to Britain's Sunday Times, members of the Afghan army are forging secret alliances with the Taliban, threatening to undermine the ability of Afghan authorities to maintain control just as NATO troops prepare to hand over power to the country's security forces.

In Ghazni province an hour from capital Kabul, Afghan army lieutenant Mohammad Wali admitted to the newspaper that he and a local Taliban commander were working together. The two share intelligence about military operations and plan to loot NATO supply convoys and divide-up the proceeds, the newspaper reported.

Although the case, in general, does not apply to Afghan army, it indicates to the fact that Taliban are still at large and can persuade or pressurize Afghan soldiers to cooperate with them in carrying out attacks. Taliban already claim of having a parallel government, their own governors, district governors and commanders in Afghanistan. In many districts where Taliban have control and influence, people consult them to resolve their disputes.

Such cases must be taken as serious and the Taliban sympathizers hiding among ANSF should be identified. If not, more green on blue attacks and attacks on NATO-supply containers should be expected.
