Karzai’s Point Hold Some Weight

If on one hand the NATO troops' withdrawal plan has escalated concerns inside Afghanistan, on the other certain countries in region are also worried about premature withdrawal of international forces from this country.

Russia's envoy to NATO Nikolay Korchunov warns against premature NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan and says Afghanistan must be able to provide for its own security before the alliance begins a withdrawal.

However, Afghanistan would not be able to stand on its feet in regards of security until it is provided with what President Karzai has criticized the US for.

President Hamid Karzai, on Thursday, October 04, accused the United States of playing a "double game" by fighting a war against Afghan insurgents rather than their backers in Pakistan, and by refusing to supply his country with the weapons it needs to fight enemies across the border.

He threatened to turn to China, India and Russia for those arms. Although Karzai criticism has been countered by US Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta by saying that the President should be thankful to the US rather than criticizing it, Kazai's points about lack of sufficient weapons for Afghan land and air forces do hold some weight.

To counter enemies such as Taliban and al Qaida who have no doubt support from certain Islamic countries, Afghanistan is in dire need of latest weapons, war crafts and other equipments to successfully defend itself.

President Karzai's worries about lack of enough weapons and aircrafts for ANSF are quite timely.

In the next two years, security transition process and after that the withdrawal process of NATO soldiers will complete and ANSF will have to stand on their own against the growing threat to Afghanistan's security. The ANSF would not be able to accomplish such a task with empty hands. They need to be equipped with modern arms.

Besides the vital training programs for ANSF, the US and other Western allies of Afghanistan must provide this country with war equipments that it is in need of. If President Karzai thinks that the US and its allies are not willing to support Afghanistan in this regard, Afghanistan as an independent country must go for purchasing arms of its need from countries in the region.

There is no point the US can object Afghanistan for such a step as it boosting the defense of this country and that is what the international community wants.
