Ethnic Clashes in Burma

The ethnic clashes of Burma have spread to more areas in the country and hundreds of houses and mosques of Muslim minority have been burnt down. Similarly, dozens of Muslims have been killed and injured by the majority Buddhists of the country.

The riots started on Wednesday in the Maktila region of the country where a small disagreement ignited the clashes between the followers of two religions. As Muslims are a minority and comparatively weaker both in the said area and country, so they had to sustain more losses and struggled hard to protect their lives and property.

Burma is a small country near China with the followers of Buddhism in majority while a small number of Muslims are also living in the country. The followers of both the religions lived in peace with each other, however, passing time gave birth to the differences between them and the gap started drifting very recently.

The condition and sufferings of Burmese Muslims caught the attention of international media when hundreds of them were killed and thousands more forced to leave their towns and cities by the extremist Buddhists of the country.

The police and other security forces of the country failed to protect the lives and property of vulnerable Muslims and they were left as prey to the extremist Buddhists.

After the riots, the emergency has been declared in the area but according to police, they are still unable to stop the extremist Buddhist groups who are carrying out well-planned attacks on the Muslim populations.

According to the reports, many mosques have also been burnt down while there has been reported the shortage of edibles in the area as the shops and businesses are closed from the last five days. In order to protect their lives, large number of Muslims has also hidden themselves in different areas.

Burma was a country governed by the dictatorial military rule for many decades and just two years before, the democratic system of government was established and democratic practices were given permission. The recent clashes are considered to be very pernicious for the democratic future of the country. Similarly, nations of the world have urged the Burmese government to protect the lives and property of the minorities and give them their due rights.

The United Nations and international community should interfere in the issue and world media should bring out the true picture of the situation. The government of Burma should be forced by the international community to protect the lives and property of its citizens and especially of the minorities.
