Soaring Tensions in Korean Peninsula

Growing tensions in the Korean peninsula has raised serious concerns about the eruption of another war in the world, which might harm a lot both the Koreas and other nations in the region. The tensions soared when military of US and South Korea started their annual joint military exercises. These exercises are termed to be the rehearsal of war by the North Korea and result in the extreme military readiness by Pyongyang.  This year again, North Korea warned US and South to refrain from any kind of military adventure and announced general military alert.

This is also worth mentioning here that joint military exercises started after both the allies reached to a military pact according to which the army of both the sides will be able to take stricter armed action in case North tries to attack soil of the South. According to the pact, South Korea can anytime ask for military assistance from the United States against its neighbor.

The region was covered by the dark clouds of war when US warplanes flew over the Korean peninsula which tempted the North to make its missiles ready and vowed to strike American cities and its military bases across the peninsula. According to the experts, North Korea may not be having full capacity to strike such distant targets but even then, it might result in a full-fledged military conflict from the both the sides.

Role of North Korean President was also important in this regard as he passed the whole of last week monitoring the military frontlines and igniting a new spirit of war in his army against United States and South Korea.

This tension also resulted in the complete collapse of communication between the two sides when North Korea cut off the final hotline with the South in response to its military exercises with US.

On the other hand, world powers have remained silent on the issue and they are closely monitoring the situation while China and Russia have asked both the sides to refrain from any small mistake that might ignite the flames of conflict and war. In this regard, the sides have been urged to avoid military conflict and take the way of negotiations.

As seen in the case of Syria, war is not the solution of any problem and harms all the sides involved. It should not be forgotten that war will bring calamity and disaster for all the countries of the region and would throw the countries back for many decades. It becomes the responsibility of international powers to make both the sides calm and return to the table of negotiations.
