Widespread Corruption

Nowadays everybody complains about the high level of corruption in the country. Putting the issue with officials in key position, everyone just tries to defend himself or herself and blames others for the crippling danger to economic and political effectiveness.

Previously, people were looking towards Parliament to at least mount pressure on administration and through that bring down the level of corruption. But recently reports denote that MP’s have done remarkably well in terms of corruption combat mission.

Finance Minister, Omer Zakhilwal has said a group of MP’s in the parliament was involved in drugs and booze’s illegal trade as well as he accused them of asking him for bribe in return for not being impeached. In reaction, the upper house of the parliament on Tuesday attributed the recent assertion of Finance Minister on what he blamed, to his questioning by lawmakers asking him for providing evidence in this respect.

Senate’s First Deputy Chiarman, Mohammad Alam Izdiyar, asked him to provide evidence to prove his claim of what he accused the MPs of being involved in drug and banned Sharab (booze) traffic and trade. Few days ago, Parliament also accused him of violation of laws in five cases, failing to be accompanied by the advisors in his foreign trips, being involved in nepotism, misusing authority, offering 2011’s contradictory budget figure and collecting cash for Karzai’s election campaign.

Indeed, the corruption is widespread and very dangerous for the economic and political stability. Everybody somehow complains about the problem. Those who are searching for employment in the public office, their first step is searching for someone who works in the department or knows someone there.

The chances are assessed on the account of closeness of relation with public employees and the importance of the position they hold, not on account of academic and career merits. In other words, no doubt that how experienced and well-qualified you are, but there is need of earlier arrangement. Individuals who have no one to refer them mostly decide not to apply because many think that the positions were already filled but announced to pretend formality.

Anyhow, the report expresses worry about the future when the responsibility of logistic procurement transfers to Afghans. Meanwhile, Afghan officials frequently pointed finger towards foreign allies for major part of corruption in the country.

They hope that when foreign donations are spent through government channels, the level of corruption will diminish. However, the profile of government does not show sign of success in combating corruption, but let’s see whether the government fights corruption seriously and brings down the country to lower Band?
