Students Ask for Reforms

It has been two consecutive days that around 100 students from social science faculty are on hunger strike, protesting communal behaviors and discrimination. According to protestor, head of the faculty, Mr. Ghulam Farooq Abdullah acts like a dictator. Exams are not much important because the result is determined by how close you are with a professor. In other words, the result of exam relates how muchyou are close to a teacher not your talent and merit.

There are also murmurings that some university professors act on the account of ethnicity. They try to humiliate students other than their own ethnic groups and try their best to make students who are from other ethnic group fail.

What is the authenticity of these allegations is difficult to say, but there are some issues that need to be handled properly by university administration. Meanwhile, it should also be noted that many students prefer to shout because they understand no one will listen to their complaints. Therefore, whenthey face injustice and their exam paper is not checked properly, they just try to ignore the issue.

There is one problem in Kabul University.  It is a public university where thousands of students are currently following their higher education in different fields. However, many private universities have popped up but none can match it due to 80 years old history. It is one of the oldest universities in the region.

Unfortunately being the oldest university, the system has remained old and outdated as well. Some of the students even claim that few teachers do not use updated teaching methodology and do not have any inclination to use modern technology in the university. Therefore, the students have to suffer in this regard.

Criticizing a teacher still is a taboo or perhaps no one dares doing so, obsessed about the exam’s result. A teacher can easily drag a red cross on the exam sheet of a student without even putting a glimpsemeanwhile no one dares to ask because if a student refers to concerned individuals, he finally may get disappointed.

In brief, the situation of public universities is pathetic and if the government does not take necessary action to make much competitive environment through replacing the methodology and teachers who hold the seat due to linkage with government officials, then, as protestors put, they became annihilators of the talents rather than the breeder of them.
