Future Becomes Gloomier

Security has drastically deteriorated over the past six months. Compared with previous years, insurgency has spiked up to a dangerous level this year. Growing insecurity now presents a gloomier picture of Afghanistan’s future, especially after withdrawal of US-led troops from the country by the end next year.

Growing insecurity raises many serious questions over the roles and functions of NDS, ANSF and ISAF that are responsible to provide security to the life and property of the people. Insurgents consistently become successful to launch attacks even in the highly fortified areas of Kabul which indicates weakness of Afghanistan’s intelligence agency on one hand and security forces on the other.

The war against terrorism requires sacrifices more than before now specifically when it comes to civilian casualties. Reports on civilian killing are disappointing and alarming. Afghans go about their daily activities but with great fear as terrorist spare nobody even the small children and women. Tuesday’s bloody attack on Supreme Court which was carried out by using an explosive-laden vehicle killed 17 and injured 45 people. The incident clearly indicates that the Taliban fight a war against the civilians including women and children and not against the Afghan government and its international backers. This is also indicated by the dramatic increase in civilian deaths.

According to latest UNAMA figures, civilian casualties have spiked by 24% in the past six months when compared with the same period of the last year. Last year, 7,500 civilians were killed and Taliban are responsible for 81% of these deaths.

Regretfully, the government of Afghanistan has not been able to take any major step to counter the continued killings of innocent Afghans – except condemnations. The people of Afghanistan are sick of witnessing bloodshed that occurs almost on daily basis.

Taliban are responsible for the lingering violence in our country – no doubt. But the government can also be held responsible as it has not been able to counter the growth of insurgency completely. The government seemingly has become a victim of its own insufficient policies and strategies.

Only improvement in security situation can regain the trust of people and diminish their concerns. The future, for Afghans, seems completely vague and the level of uncertainty has also risen. The factor of uncertainty is largely responsible for waves of disappointments raised among the people.
