Students and Politics

Recent crisis in the University of Kabul was alarming in a sense that it followed a series of activities that disparaged the classes and academia in the prime institute of higher education in the country. Last few years witnessed a number of activities that show how different factors have greatly disturbed the proper functioning of a number of educational institutes of the country. Last winter, citizens of Kabul witnessed the lengthy demonstrations and protests of students of Polytechnic University over the issue of changing its name. Till the latest reports, the issue has calmed but still there are present sparks beneath this cold ash, which can ignite the same demonstrations at any given time.

All these incidents show that, either deliberately or automatically, our institutions are getting more and more politicized. And the concerned authorities who can handle the situation are either ignoring this with a criminal negligence or are incompetent to handle the situation properly. In the present scenario when we are not hopeful of anything about the future of our country and when we have pinned all our hopes with the educated generations of country, such incidents can be termed as criminal acts.

Politics in Universities is not something bad. There is present a healthy history of student unions in all the major universities of the world where such an arrangement helps students in a number of issues like arranging classes, solving their financial problems and bringing harmony in their contacts with the administration and teaching staff and such unions have greatly addressed their purpose but students were never allowed to fall into the hands of politicians to serve their dirty aims.

It appears as if our students are being brought under such political influences that can not only harm their future but also injure the smooth functioning of the institutes. Our students may not be aware of these, but there are always present some hidden hands that may utilize their energies to meet their own heinous objectives.

All our hopes of a bright future are pinned with an educated and talented future that will steer the oars of nation in future and this can only happen if students give their complete attention and dedication to their studies and acquiring knowledge. At the same time, they can also polish their abilities by involving in positive politics but they should be aware of those who enter their lines and steer them towards a dark destiny.

At the same time, government officials and university authorities should handle the students with extreme delicacy and listen to their fair demands. They should also not let to flourish the negative elements in Universities.
