Flood Affectees Awaits Government Response

Natural calamities are inadvertent, unalterable and sometimes devastating- having adopted vigilant stratagem their devastating effects can be reduced to minimum. Water is found the most essential life sustaining element subsequent to air. We draw most of drinkable water from underground water reserves. Rain is elementary to ensure a constant raise in underground water level that compensate human requirement. Moreover, the surplus water after heavy rainfall if left unchanelled turn a calamity and if stored in dames could be brought to several practical uses like promoting agriculture, generating electricity etc, with addition to reduction in its destructive effects.

Afghanistan is one of the countries that suffers acute water shortage whilst its agricultural industry primarily relies on rain water. Every year the heavy or mild rainfall brings lots of water that is drained to river without being taken the advantage of – which depicts government’s incompetence to come up with requisite preparation storing overflowing water than wasting it. Mostly the heavy rainfall causes violent flood that not only turn devastating but also claims sacred human lives.

This year too, heavy rainfall followed by sadistic flood struck several districts and villages bringing a bad fortune for enormous people whose residential enclaves already suffer ill-administration. Triggered by heavy downpours, flash floods that hit several provinces, including Kabul, left 23 people dead and several others wounded, formerly. According to Afghanistan Natural Disasters Management Authority (ANDMA), the downpour that began late Saturday led to flooding in Kabul, Maidan Wardak, Paktika, Kapisa and Parwan provinces.

The floods also destroyed several orchards and farm fields and swept away dozens of houses and seven vehicles in the area. In Paghman district of Kabul, dozens of household animals perished in the floods that damaged crops and orchards spread over dozens of acres of land, according to local sources.

In Kabul City, the worst-hit areas were Ghaibi Kala and Joi Sher, falling in the city’s 15th police district. Residents are reported to have lost homes and most of their belongings to the devastating floods. The flood has reportedly inflicted heavy financial losses on residents of flood-hit provinces and districts. Nearly 100 people died in the previous floods last week, when thousands of acres of agriculture lands and several homes were destroyed.

In most part of flood affected areas, masses are left to mercy to government’s machinery to be put to action, till date people awaits rescue services after having lost their beloved ones and material belongings. A rescue team accompanied with required equipments, paramedic staff and medicine are the immediate need of flood affectees; the government must have dispatched to people waiting for immediate response. The government has to take concrete measure to provide the affectees with fundamental commodities and must devise strategies to curtail such calamities in the time to come.
