ImprovingAfghan National Police

Afghan National Police (ANP) has gradually improves as today they are able to respond some pressing security challenge. But still they need to be properly trained and equipped with armed facilities to encounter growing security threat.

The interior ministry, which is basically responsible for domestic tranquility and police reform, has undertaken several programs to build police’s capacity and let more acceptable reforms, yet critics exist, analysts are of the view that the reform process is slow and flawed as the international security forces are withdrawing from Afghanistan next year.

In several occasions, the top officials reaffirmed that they had sufficient funds to proceed with a productive and successful police reforms. Even though the recent worsening and violent security situation spreads doubts about police reforms process and makes it difficult to display a realistic judgment on their ability, Afghanistan’s police is  getting gradual strength, which should be further enhanced.

While training police and providing them with sophisticated armed equipments, it is important to increase their awareness about civic laws, legal and social issues. Police has the duty to protect the country’s law and order as well lives and properties of people. They should also identify obstructionists and other problems to ensure public safety and peace. Without comprehensive knowledge about contemporary law and constitutional requirements, police can not maintain law and order. It is the reason that in rare cases, they even violate law.
