Peace in Syria – is it Possible?

It seems that human beings are too brutal to control their aggression and act in cooperation and support with one other to acquire peace and tranquility. Though some thinkers suggest that human beings are by nature violent, there are many proofs that negate the idea. Nonetheless, the pursuit of self-centered human desires, ideas and interests has made them violent and war-liking animals.

Human beings differentiate themselves from other creatures because of their superior mind and intellect; however, that does not seem to be helping them much in acquiring order and peace in the world. A glance over the circumstances in different parts of the world will clearly depict what human intellect and wisdom have brought them.

Considering the circumstances in Syria, it is not very difficult to conclude that human wisdom has only taught them the arrangement for their own extinction and misery. It is really pathetic to see innocent people dying and so-called world leaders taking interest in proving their ideas and stances correct and eternal. Is there any idea or stance more sacred than human life?

The calculations show that more than 100,000 people have been killed as a result of war between the Asad regime and the opposition groups and more than 2 million people have become refugees, yet the world leaders are thinking of solving the issue with further aggression. More aggression and war will definitely bring death to a considerable population of Syria and after such death; there will be peace as there will not be many people to fight against each other.

Extinction is not peace. Peace has to be established among the living people not among the dead. Peace is an interaction, harmonious and orderly, among human beings. World leaders have to strive for peace in Syria not for their political interests. By achieving their political objectives at the altar of poor Syrian civilians, they would not show their political might or their dominance over the world but would show their shortsighted intellect and wisdom. They may get their interests but may sacrifice their humanity.

Greatness is not in promulgating war. It is in disseminating peace. It is in caring for life. It is in saving the guiltless children and women from the tyranny of chemical weapons. It is in sitting together and listening to each other and trying to be more sensible, if not wise. It is easy to achieve greatness and peace; all it requires is giving up the self-centered and egoistic interests.
