Increasing confidence of criminals

Like corruption, violence against women, insecurity and some other threatening factors, the problem that is getting serious day by day is the increasing lawful practices of rich and powerful in Kabul generally and in some remote areas of the country specifically.

Driving carelessly, breaking the laws of traffic and getting into wrong lanes and then bluntly defending such wrong acts are the scenes that are becoming increasingly common in Kabul. In the same way, incidents of oppressing the weak, grabbing the lands and property of weak and even kidnapping the children or young girls of poor and helpless are heard by the public and every passing day witnesses an increase in such incidents. It is also very dangerous that police and other law-enforcement agencies seem to be helpless in controlling such cases as their perpetrators are either so strong or they are anyhow linked with high government officials in which high ranking police officers are also involved, that nothing can be done against them.

The beating and torture of a policeman by the son and accomplices of a top National Army General reverberated in our media some months ago and till now, no action has been taken against the culprits. It simply means that such an attitude would further encourage such wrong-doers to commit such crimes more confidently in future.

In the same way, strong and powerful landlords, tribal chiefs and warlords of different tribal or remote areas of the country consider themselves above any kind of law and don’t give any importance to the state laws. It is the reason why, their words become the law and their conduct become the practical norm or sample for the public. Keeping in view the above realities, it is not a matter of surprise that crime rate is increasing day by day and committing crimes is becoming easier and more common.

The prime cause of this situation lies in the roots of our political setup. Our politicians never learned to support democratic practices and they always preferred their own benefits to the state laws and human rights. Because of their attitude, there is found no fear of any law or accountability in the powerful members of our society and this mentality has given them a free hand to commit any kind of crime.

As the problem originates from the roots of our top and high ranking ministers, officials and politicians so it is necessary that law should be made equal to all so that no one should dare to commit any kind of crime and fear of accountability and punishment should prevail equally.

Ministers and top government officials should be stopped from doing any favor and recommendation for any wrong-doer and such an act should also be included in crimes list. At the same time, it becomes the responsibility of media to make public such events and bring public pressure on all those who either support the wrong-doers or ignore their crimes. Until and unless this problem is solved from its bases, the situation will worsen and increasing crimes and insecurity will set on fire the blessings and gains of present democratic setup.
