Increasing Role of Media in Afghanistan

The increasing role and effectiveness of media in the recent years is one of the positive factors contributing to the overall progress of our country. Media has not only increased the awareness of public but it has also emerged as a platform where people can have their say. It is also remarkable that the progress made by Afghan media in such a short period of time has not been achieved by a number of other countries even in longer duration and this shows that a significant element of a democratic government is improving steadily that would ensure the balanced functioning of all the organs of a democratic setup. At present, there are dozens of television channels, radio channels, newspapers, magazines and other elements of mass communication which is really remarkable having a look at the past history of the country.

Almost a decade ago, there was present only one state-owned television channel and a single radio channel but in these ten years, we saw that there was a brisk advancement in the field and large number of television and radio channels were started. Similarly, there were a few newspapers with limited circulation while at present; we have a large number of newspapers in both our national languages (Dari and Pashto) and also in English. At the same time, other local languages also have their representative newspapers and it shows that these languages are also getting their chance to improve and provide with information to their target readers.

With the increase in number, the quality of programs of these television and radio channels is also satisfactory and in short period of time, they have excelled to the levels where many other countries took many decades to reach. At the same time, we have mass readership of newspapers which is adding to the general awareness of our public while children and other groups of society are also getting their share in acquiring information and having entertainment by reading the articles or pages of their choice.

With all these achievements, government is also very much cautious of its different acts because the vigilant media soon makes public and criticizes the wrong act of government and it is the reason why, all the government ministers and organs try their hard to carry a good image in the eyes of media which can be called the indirect eyes of the public.

With all these achievements, a heavy responsibility falls on the shoulders of media to bring more standardized reporting and the quality of news and other programs should be enhanced. At the same time, it is necessary that both public and government should join hands to ensure the freedom and proper functioning of the media.
