Responsibility in Announcing Public Holidays!

Almost 2 weeks passed and all the schools, both private and public, were closed down for the long winter vacations. The vacations started almost in mid December and will continue till 20th March when the New Year will begin and schools will resume their sessions. In the same way, almost all the public universities were closed down more than a month ago and they suffered a lot this year on account of ‘Loya Jirga’ and other problems. The private universities are also having their exams and will soon be closed once the papers are taken. They will also resume their classes when educational institutes will be functional in the beginning of spring.

If we look at the developed countries of the world, we find that less they have vacations and holidays in a year, more is the progress of the country. In these countries, all the holidays and vacations are already planned and at any condition, students are not allowed to waste their precious time. On the other hand, our leaders and powers of authority feel very confident to announce holidays on their discretion and without any proper planning and consideration. A shameful example was noticed the other day when a department announced holiday for a day and then it was canceled and termed as a ‘misinformation’, but till then, many organizations had conveyed this message to their employees and similar arrangements were made that the attendance on the following day was very poor and the performance of offices was really distressing. In the same way, the public life was badly crippled when more than a week long holidays were announced by government on account of ‘Loya Jirga’, in which some could have been easily termed unnecessary.

It is also the habit of our politicians that they interfere in the public issues like their own private property. On a number of occasions, they announce holidays without considering their different impacts and legal aspects and as a result, a great chaos and frustration is noticed on different levels of the society. Because of all these, our students and teachers have developed a mindset that a holiday would be declared even for a petty reason and thus they also remain at home on all such occasions.

The future and proper stability of a country depends on the skilled and educated generations but with so many holidays in a year, we put in jeopardy the future of our country and all our hopes are diminishing with this. All the government officials should be very careful before announcing any kind of holiday in future and a certain responsible ministry or department should be made responsible to take any such decision and convey the announcements and these critical issues should not be used for personal gains and benefits.
