Terrorism Remains a Challenge

Recently, the Taliban militants have compounded their attacks and insecurity loom large across the country. Even though, terrorism is a matter of great concern for Afghan people, the current government insists on the release of the Taliban prisoners.

The Taliban-led insurgency and deadly acts of terror, causing Afghans’ casualties are the current news in the country’s media. According to reports, at least three Afghan Local Police (LAP) officers were killed and eight others including two policemen were injured due to a suicide attack in Andar District of Ghazni province, on Monday. Moreover, two women and four children are also said to be among the injured.

Commander Shaheen, the head of the public uprising forces against the Taliban militants, was also killed by a suicide attack in Ghazni province on Saturday.

At least three civilians were killed in eastern Ghazni by a roadside improvised explosive device (IED).

At least six people including Taliban militants were killed or injured following an ambush by Taliban fighters in Shebarghan City of Jawzjan province of Afghanistan late Sunday night.

A helicopter of the NATO-led Italian forces was shot at by Taliban militants in Herat province late Sunday.

Moreover, to the collective surprise of Afghan people, a 10-year-old girl, Spozhmai, was arrested with an explosive vest, while she was attempting to attack Afghan Security Police. She was said to be compelled by her brother, who is a member of the Taliban militants, to carry out this suicide attack. Even though, many male children are being brainwashed and are sent for carrying out suicide attacks, Spozhmai is the first female child who has been involved in terrorist act.

It is a shame for Afghans, that Taliban still pose threat to people’s security, years after their downfall. In other words, democracy still remains an inaccessible desire for Afghan people, despite a decade under our democratic government. Hence, the issue of terrorism is a serious challenge to the country.

In spite of the current militancy going on in the country, President Karzai persists on the release of the Taliban insurgents from Bagram prison. Based on recent news, the Afghan review board has announced the release of the 88 prisoners from the Bagram prison, even though these prisoners were branded as “dangerous” by the United States.

This comes as President Karzai following his meeting with the US senators on Thursday, ordered to review the cases of 88 prisoners, who are believed to be involved in major attacks against the Afghan and US forces.

This issue puts current government in a collision course with the Afghan public opinion. The heavy casualties of Afghan civilians and police seen against the release of the militants are in direct contradiction, which should be re-considered thoroughly.
