The Alarming Attack at the Heart of Kabul

The barbaric attack on a Lebanese hotel at heart of Kabul city once again rang the alarm of danger as well as showcased the true face of Taliban militants. Explosions made by three armed suicide bombers who exchanged fires with security forces destroyed the hotel and surrounding buildings in manner that it looks much like a miracle if anyone survived the incident. 21 Afghans and foreign citizens were killed, including the chief of IMF office in Kabul. The deadly attack and casualties left behind will bear far larger consequences and alert foreigners who are interested to travel to the country and make an investment. Right after the attack, Taliban’s spokesman contacted media and claimed the responsibility with arrogance while individuals within the team of President Hamid Karzai are making serious endeavors that such attacks are carried by other terrorists whose hideouts are located outside of the border.

Taliban have kept their lethal attacks continue and they do not seem in the mood to pursue any sort of negotiations. The efforts made by government for the reconciliation does not seem to be getting roots and even the soft instance of the government has failed to gravitate Taliban towards the peace talks and they have continued terrorism.

The belated reaction of government further irritated foreign allies who have made huge sacrifices without recognition. The allegation of our top officials of planned presence or even cooperating with militants further illustrates the plight in the country. While President Karzai harshly reacts to every civilian casualty, the presidential palace waited for 21 hours to release official statement to condemn the attacks.

Moreover, the attack should be branded as warning. The undetermined destiny of Bilateral Security Agreement will further embolden militants to expand their activities. Because it is highly possible corresponding to military pullout, foreign NGOs and individuals may not take interest to continue working in the country due to security. A tremendous foreign disengagement will affect the economic situation and will lead the civil dissent and ultimately pave the way for evil groups like Taliban.

Thus, it would be so kind of our officials to take serious actions in order to control the situation. Scapegoating cannot solve the problem rather will double it. Hence, officials should understand Taliban are not a kind of group that may lay down arms after foreign military withdrawal. The only way to bring them on the negotiation table is making them believe that armed struggle will never lead them to success.
