Valentine in Afghanistan

A couple of days earlier Valentine’s Day was celebrated in most of the countries around the world. The day is celebrated on February 14 and is considered a day dedicated to those who love each other, especially the couples. Though it not is celebrated in Afghanistan in a manner that it is celebrated in other countries around the world, it is talked about by some people in social media; however, the number of such people is very small as internet usage has remained luxurious and limited to educated and youngsters of Afghan people. Even among them, the percentage celebrating the day is quite inconsiderable.

But no doubt, the trend has been set and if the situation of the country does not face a major blow back, the course of time will prove to favor the celebrators of the day. As the force of history will grow larger, the traditional ideas might compensate with the modern changes.

Similar to the rest of countries, conservative layers of the society, particularly religious scholars, were resisting against Televisions. But when it became so widespread that become inevitable to watch. So, the strategy moved from rejecting to modification of programs they telecast. No doubt, war on types of programs is somehow global, observed in the most developed countries, based on argument that can have bad psychological effects for children. However the degree differs with culture of each country. Some countries might find a particular program immoral while some others see no problem in it and even allow their children to watch them.

The shift from rejecting new technology and focusing on their contents can be branded as victory for modernization. Taliban can spearhead fundamentalism that openly stood against Television. Both Radio and TV channels were branded as tools of Satan or the western Pagans. Though, based on reports, they also kept watching TV channels but deprived the rest of people from them. It was highly possible if the regime could eradicate all its foes, the so-called immoral activities.

Valentine is also not out of this sphere. As said, if a major blowback does not push the society back once again, it also will change into a favorable day for Afghan lovers.
