Fearing Prospective of Presidential Election Result

The campaign convoy of Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, a presidential nominee, came under attack while returning from Jalalabad province to Kabul. Though no one had injuries, the incident can hit the alarm for presidential candidates to be much more cautious about their movements around the country.Mr. Orya said no one was hurt in the incident, but added: "We have a major problem with the government. It's the government's job to provide security, and the government knew that Abdullah is going through that road. It should have secured the road." On the other hand, security officials said that due security measures were held. Police and soldiers were deployed on the road where the convoy was planned to cross. The firings also were made from far away and that is why no one was hurt.

No doubt, attack sparked the alarm for all presidential nominees. Presidential candidates still have not opened their offices at provincial level. Most of them are concentrated in Kabul city which however plays role but cannot ensure proper and comprehensive campaigning. In most of eastern provinces Taliban militants exercise influence and will not leave any stone unturned to disrupt the election. They have sanctioned the election and vowed to disrupt the process.

This year, the election will be really decisive. Many Afghan common civilians fear about a gloomy picture of the future. Since both previous elections were held under tight security measures of international community and none of the candidates who were defeated had the will as well as the guts to bring about mayhem, the upcoming election will be so vital and determining. Though foreign allies still exercise power in the country, but responsibility is transferred to Afghans. The duration of campaign is also limited, around two months. During these two months, none of the candidates indeed can define their policies and play role in shifting the views of civilians. Meanwhile unlike developed countries, due to lack of polls, all eleven candidates view themselves potential winners of the election. Many of them have expressed their worries about possible fraud. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah last week said that he had only two rivals: Fraud and Fraud.

Similar statements are heard from the rest of them too. So, it is possible that such mentality push them not to accept the result of the election ending to victory of their rival. In such scenario, it is possible they do not play fair and embark to undemocratic measures which would be fatal.
