On Monday, March 17, Presidential runner Abdur Rab Rasoul Sayyaf addressed his supporters in Kabul that he would establish a caliphate-like system if he wins the election but did not mention what he would if he fails. The television report from the gathering was sending shock down to spine of common civilians. Reports were saying that religious scholars have announced their support for Rasoul Sayyaf, but the participants looked much like session of Taliban leadership. Pul-e-Khishti Mosque prayer leader also said that we (religious leaders) support Sayyaf because he is a good religious leader.

Though he does not have much popularity among Afghan civilians, his statement made many to worry about the future. His statements look much to one of his slogans written on one of his huge photos saying, “We bring out the right of oppressor from the gorge of oppressed” instead of “We bring out the rights of oppressed from the gorge of oppressor”. Surprisingly, one of his main slogans is enforcement of law. However, he has not yet explained whether he would alter the constitution as well to achieve a caliphate-like system.

First of all, Afghanistan has a constitution where the presidential system is set for the country. Any change and modification in it needs time and efforts. If he violates the very spirit of the constitution, how he chants slogans for enforcement of laws. Has he developed any other particular law and he is talking about that? Or he tries to lounge on the couch of Muslim Caliph?

Interestingly, he opposes Taliban militants on account of religion. Indeed, his statements reflect they both talk from a similar front. Taliban were also following the agenda to establish an Islamic Emirate much similar to what he supports now. Having fantasy about the Islamic civilization and Islamic emperors in the past, such slogan may seem interesting for part of the people, but most of Afghans have grown enough and understand the true face of those who are putting those Ideas. Under the Islamic kingdoms, even atheists, Jews and Christians were living without any persecution but these gentlemen cannot accept sects within the Islam as they displayed during civil war. The complication of the society and lack of exceptional figures like those of Islamic Caliphs will make such system a disaster for the country instead of making a heaven.
