Lebanon Should Solve Problems with Israel First Before Any Peace Deal: President

BEIRUT - Lebanese President Michel Aoun said Lebanon has problems with Israel that should be solved first before a peace agreement between the two countries is considered, a statement by Lebanon's Presidency said Sunday.
Aoun made the remarks when asked about the possibility of Lebanon taking its cue from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and reaching a peace deal with Israel during an interview with French TV channel BFMTV.
Israel still occupies Lebanese lands and the two countries need to agree on the demarcation of borders, he noted.
Lebanon and Israel have long disagreed on border demarcations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Tensions have increased between the two countries in the past decade when natural gas was discovered in the area.
In response to the controversial UAE-Israeli peace agreement, Aoun said the UAE is an independent country that has the right to do whatever it wants.
The peace deal between the UAE and Israel is condemned by supporters of Hezbollah, a Shiite political party in Lebanon, which has been at war with Israel for decades. (Xinhua)
