New Syrian Opposition Leader to Visit Paris Next Week

PARIS - French foreign ministry confirmed Friday that new head of Syria's opposition coalition Ahmad Jarba is to visit Paris next week, without giving the exact date.

President of the Syrian National Coalition Jarba "will indeed visit France next week," said Philippe Lalliot, spokesman of French foreign ministry, at a daily press briefing.

Lalliot promised to notify the public once the date of the visit is confirmed.

Local media said that French President Francois Hollande was scheduled to meet Jarba, who was elected as new opposition leader on July 6, next Wednesday to promote a political end of Syrian crisis.

Citing a diplomatic source, the news channel BFMTV said the Paris meeting, the first between the two, would be "France's message of support for a political solution in Syria and also of its commitment at all levels."

In a previous TV interview, Hollande called on the international community to energize efforts to reach a diplomatic alternative to end violence in Syria, but kept military options on the table. (Xinhua)
