EU Calls for Action Plan for Growth at G20 Summit in Russia

BRUSSELS - European Union (EU) leaders on Tuesday called on the G20 to come up with an action plan with a focus on balanced growth and sustainability.

In a joint letter to the 28 EU heads of state and government, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said, “Global growth and employment remain weak and should therefore be our primary concern at the St. Petersburg summit.”

They urged G20 leaders to adopt a strong “St. Petersburg Action Plan” to send a positive message to improve global confidence and support global recovery. “We need to show unity around a common purpose, and demonstrate that global institutions, and in particular the G20, are delivering,” they said.

Key issues expected to be discussed at summit include financial reform, tax evasion and the reform of international financial architecture.

“We need to remain vigilant and proactive to support the recovery and find our way to strong, balanced, sustainable and inclusive growth.” they added.

The G20 leaders’ summit is to be held in St. Petersburg on Sept. 5-6. (Xinhua)
