Senate Must Approve Anti-Money Laundering Law Soon: Delawari

KABUL - Head of Afghanistan Central Bank (Da Afghanistan Bank) Nurullah Delawari on Wednesday asked for the immediate approval of the Anti-Money Laundering law by senators.

Delawari stresses that he has to attend the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) meeting on June 22, 2014 in Paris with the approved law in hand to prevent Afghanistan from being blacklisted.

"We ask the Senate to approve the law as soon as possible, as it is an important law in the areas of economy and business of the country," Delawari explained. "If the law is not passed in time, Afghanistan will be blacklisted."

If Senate does not pass the law soon all foreign investment in the country will be halted affecting the economy of the country.

"We have to join the meeting [in Paris] with the approved law; this will be a sign of achievement for us," he added. "To prevent the problem from creating crisis the Senate needs to pass the law to President Karzai for his signature."

The Senate claims that they need to bring changes to the articles of the law, which the Lower House of Parliament approved on Monday, in national interest instead of catering to the advantages of the banks.

Representatives from 182 countries will attend the FATF meeting in Paris, only four days away. (Tolonews)
