Spanta to Lead Team for Talks with Pakistan

KABUL - National Security Advisor Rangin Dadfar Spanta is expected to lead a delegation to Islamabad for talks on cooperation in the war on terror, a report said on Sunday.

President Hamid Karzai agreed to send his top security advisor to Pakistan for discussions after a meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s special envoy in Kabul this week.

High Peace Council member Qazi Amin Waqad told a Pakistani newspaper: “We have been informed that a high-level delegation will visit Islamabad under the leadership of Dr Spanta.”

The Express Tribune quoted Waqad as saying HPC Secretary Masoom Stanikzai and other senior officials would accompany Dr Spanta. “We are happy the two countries are talking on important issues.”

No date has yet been firmed for the visit so far. Sharif had earlier sent Mehmood Khan Achakzai as his special envoy to Kabul to seek Afghanistan’s cooperation in eliminating terrorism.

Karzai has assured Pakistan of all-out cooperation and has stressed the need for a roadmap to coordinate efforts for dismantling terrorist safe havens. (Pajhwok)
