IEC behind Election Deadlock: MPs

IEC behind Election Deadlock: MPs

KABUL - The House of Representative or Wolesi Jirga Members on Saturday said that the Independent Election Commission (IEC) failed the election process and has lost its creditability among the public.

While strongly criticizing the actions of the IEC, MPs have said that despite security threats, people voted in the runoff election, but the IEC failed to fulfill its responsibilities accordingly and now has lost its creditability among people.

"Unfortunately, the incidents and events that have occurred [in the election process] have decreased the commissions' creditability among the people," Fukoori Beheshti, MP from Bamiyan, said.

Zekria Zekria, MP from Kabul, said that the IEC brought Afghanistan into a crisis.

"The IEC failed," Zekria asserted. "And the result of failure led Afghanistan to a crisis."

Alongside the disappointment of the IEC's performance, the MPs said it is shameful that Americans and Europeans must interfere in the election process to dissolve the electoral deadlock. They added that foreign bodies should not meddle in the process; instead representatives from Parliament should be the ones to end this deadlock.

"While Afghanistan has a Senate and House of Representatives, it is a shame that American Senators and representatives from the EU come here to finalize the Afghanistan elections" says Fatema Aziz, MP from Kunduz.

"IEC is the institution that should address the concerns of the people, not embassies, UNAMA or any international community. IEC is the institution to decide" says Shukria Paikan, MP from Kunduz.

In addition, the House of Representatives also criticized the delay in announcement of the Provincial Council election results and emphasized that the IEC must announce the results as soon as possible. (Tolonews)
