Presidential Rivals Meet Again to Resolve Political Standoff

Presidential Rivals Meet Again to Resolve Political Standoff

KABUL - On the eve of preliminary results from the presidential runoff election, representatives of both the candidates met for a second day on Sunday in Kabul to resolve the political standoff.

Daud Sultanzoy, who represented Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai’s team in the talks, said both the sides agreed they would continue to stay in contact until they navigated toward a positive conclusion. He said both the sides agreed not to make public the details of their talks for now.

Sultanzoy, a flopped presidential candidate, added he had asked Abdullah’s camp to rejoin the election process and follow the course of law in meeting their demands.

Syed Hussain Sancharki, who speaks for Abdullah, was optimistic about the success of their talks and vowed to continue the dialogue process. He, however, warned if the election results were announced, the dialogue would be rendered meaningless.

However, an Independent Election Commission official on Sunday told Pajhwok Afghan News that the panel was all set to announce the preliminary results tomorrow.

Mujeeb Rahimi, another Abdullah’s representative, told Pajhwok Afghan News that US Ambassador James Cunningham and NATO top commander in Afghanistan Gen. Joseph Dunford held a meeting with Abdullah at his residence on Sunday.

Without going into details, Rahimi said electoral fraud allegations and matters of mutual interests came under discussion at the meeting. (Pajhwok)
