Quarrel at Kabul University Hostel Injures 24

KABUL - Head of the Ali Abad Hospital reported that many students were wounded—some were even stabbed—Sunday night in a brawl at Kabul University hostel.

The fight took place after an argument between two groups of students on the university football ground. The argument was later taken inside the hostel where the students started fighting causing injuries to several students and major financial losses for the university.

Moments after the incident, security forces arrived and took control of the situation after which the injured students were taken to the hospital.

Head of the Ali Abad Hospital, Mohammad Masoom Aziz, on Monday announced that the wounded students are recovering and will be discharged after necessary medical treatment.

"About 23 wounded students were brought to the hospital who received first aid," Aziz said. "One of the students had suffered an abdominal injury; he is under medical treatment now."

Relatives of Sultan—the student with the abdominal injury—have demanded that those responsible for the attack be arrested.

"They must investigate and arrest the person behind the attack on my nephew," Sultan's uncle said.

Kabul University Hostel was soon shut down after the fight. It is said that the hostel will reopen on the fifth day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

"I ask people not to think about race, ethnicity and religion and not engage in brawls," Khalid, a student from Kabul University, said.

Some of the students have said that the lack of management was the reason behind the brawl.

"Lack of good management from the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and the hostels as well as the lack of awareness among the National Directorate of Security (NDS) staff and interference of the intelligence services in the region have contributed to creating a big issue," Abdul Hakim Danishjo, Kabul University student, said.

Furthermore, students have stated that certain circles have tried to use such incidents to their advantage and dismantle the peace.

"I think the incident that happened last night was a coordinated attempt by certain groups," a Journalism student at Kabul University, Farhat, said.

It is not the first time that Kabul University has experienced such incidents. Last year, a student was killed and others were injured after a brawl during the month of Muharram.

Despite TOLOnews' efforts to reach the MoHE, the officials refrained from commenting on the issue. (Tolonews)
