Kubis Commends Candidates' Commitment

KABUL -  Following a US-brokered deal, the top UN diplomat in Afghanistan congratulated late Saturday night the presidential candidates on their commitment to the country’s stability and unity.

At a news conference along with the candidates and US Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Ján Kubiš said: “This evening, they showed true statesmanship and commitment to the stability and unity of the country."

He said the agreement on auditing all votes reflected the runners' commitment to a strong, prosperous and peaceful Afghanistan. "It's a very good signal and this is a good day for Afghanistan.”

In line with the agreement achieved, the winner will serve as president and will immediately form a government of national unity. The full audit would be carried out in Kabul and begin within 24 hours.

It will be carried out in accordance with the highest international standards in a number of weeks and there would be a request for postponing the presidential inauguration planned for August 2.

The audit plan also includes monitoring by international observers. Kubis urged international organisations to send, as quickly as possible, observers to augment the teams already present in Afghanistan. (Pajhwok)
