MJ Members Slam Govt. Failure to Resolve Vote Crisis

KABUL - Meshrano Jirga (MJ) members on Sunday welcomed the breakthrough in the deadlocked presidential election process, saying agreement between the two hopefuls brought to an end fears about a deepening political turmoil.

US Foreign Secretary John Kerry brokered the deal between the two candidates on Saturday night after a series of meetings with them. The matter was discussed in the Senate, with many lawmakers regretting failure of Afghans to reach an agreement themselves.

Gul Ahmad Azimi, who represents Farah province, hoped the recount of all votes and the formation of a government of national unity would help remove fears of crisis among ordinary Afghans.

“People were tense, losing confidence in their elected representatives and regretting their participation in the election but now a ray of hope has returned to them,” Azimi said.

Hidayatullah Rahi, from central Bamyan province, believed had President Karzai mediated the deal, foreigners would not have been needed. Rahi urged the presidential candidates to abide by their words.

Senate chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar supported the deal between Ahmadzai and Abdullah, but deplored it would have been better if Afghans themselves had resolved the impasse.

“I am sad that foreigners intervened like they did in 2009 and once again resolved our election crisis. It means Afghan elections are synonymous with US Secretary of State John Kerry,” he remarked. (Pajhwok)
