Former IEC Officials Still Using Commission Facilities

Former IEC Officials Still Using Commission Facilities

KABUL - A number of former Independent Election Commission (IEC) members are still using the commissions' vehicles and other facilities, instead of returning them at the end of their terms.

Former Secretariat Chief of the IEC, Zia Ul-Haq Amarkhail, is still roaming the city with two IEC vehicles. Meanwhile, IEC Chairman, Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani, said that the former IEC Chairman, Fazl Ahmad Manawi, has also not returned two of the commissions' vehicles either.

"Manawi still has the Hilux and Land Cruiser, which he has not returned to the," Nuristani said. "The transportation department of the commission has contacted Manawi, but in response he has threatened the employees of the department telling them he will not return them."

Nuristani added that he has spoken to Amarkhail and has asked that he return the two vehicles to the commission.

But according to other IEC officials, Amarkhail is still operating both vehicles.

Officials of the IEC say that they have sent an official letter to the Afghan Ministry of Interior (MoI) to seize the vehicles from Manawi, but according to MoI officials no letter from the election commission has been received.

"We never received information about a letter from the IEC in regards to Manawi and the vehicles," MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.

Manawi, now outside of Afghanistan, said that the vehicle was given to him by the former government and not the IEC.

The actions of the now former IEC members have outraged many, including Members of Parliament. MPs like Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Ramazan both stress that commission was laid on a corrupt foundation, calling the requests of returning the election commissions' properties "impossible because of corruption.

TOLOnews attempted to reach Amarkhail for comments, but to no prevail. (TOLO News)
