Nation to be Kept Posted on Peace Process: Abdullah

KABUL - Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah on Monday said progress in peace and reconciliation process would be shared with the nation, calling public support the key to success.

Addressing a gathering of Shia mourners in Kabul, the CEO promised to keep the people informed of developments on the reconciliation front: "Throughout history, millions have drawn inspiration from Yaum-i-Ashur."

Karbala and Ashura remain a source of vitality and motivation for Muslims, according to Abdullah, who said the events represented the biggest tragedy in Islamic history and symbolised Hazrat Imam Hussain’s supreme sacrifice.

The Battle of Karbala was between the forces of good and evil, with Hazrat Imam Hussain representing good and Yazid evil. Certain traditional flagellation rituals are held on the 10th day of Muharram to commemorate Hussain’s sacrifice.

Like other nations, Abdullah said, Afghanistan had been a victim of terror and extremism. Its people continued to suffer a lot due to the ongoing scourge, remarked the former foreign minister.

He used the occasion to condemn yesterday’s assassination of the deputy governor for southern Kandahar province. Abdul Qayum Patyal, who suffered grievous wounds in a gun attack, died in hospital late on Sunday.

“Establishment of the national unity government has instilled a sense of optimism among the people regarding Afghanistan’s future,” the CEO claimed. “Peace is a common desire of all people. The determination and sincerity of the government is beyond doubt... "

He promised the nation would be kept posted on peace initiatives, as people’s support was central to the success of government policies. He also stressed protection of masses’ rights. (Pajhwok)
