Ghani Attends Munich Security Conference

KABUL - President Ashraf Ghani has left Kabul for Germany to attend the 51st round of the Munich Security Conference on Friday morning, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

In his three-day official trip, Ghani is accompanied by National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar and the newly-appointed Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, the statement noted.

Ghani will also deliver a speech at the conference to share Afghanistan's views on the current security situation, it added.

The participant countries are expected to share their views on global security situation and also present their plans how to curb insurgent activities around the world.

Calling the Munich meeting important to Afghanistan and the world, the Afghan analysts urge Ghani to share concerns regarding what they believe overt interference of the regional countries into Afghanistan's affairs.

"One of the things which we have always demanded from the President is to ask the western allies to put pressures on Afghanistan's neighbors that are involved in the country's insecurity to stop backing the insurgent groups," said Abdul Qadir Zazai Watandost, head of Parliamentary commission on foreign affairs.

Abdul Jabbar Qahraman, military expert, stressed that Ghani should ask the international community for long-term presence in Afghanistan.

"Perhaps, Ghani will convince them that Afghanistan still needs their presence in the country and their continued support of the security forces," Qahraman said.

The Munich Security Conference is being held annually since 1963 on international security policy. Each year, the conference focuses on an important global security issue where the international security policy decision makers exchange their views. (Tolonews)
