Mafia Boss Raees Khudaidad Executed in Kabul

Mafia Boss Raees Khudaidad Executed in Kabul

Raees Khudaidad, the most notorious mafia boss in Afghanistan's history, was hung to death at Pul-e-Charkhi prison of Kabul, National Directorate of Security (NDS) said in a statement on Saturday.

Charged with hundreds of heinous crimes including murders, kidnappings and armed robberies, Khudaidad was executed by hanging following the verdict of Kabul Appellate Court, the statement added.

NDS—the Afghan national intelligence agency—stated in its press release that the mafia boss was hung to death in the presence of his lawyer and judicial officials.

Khudaidad was arrested last year in September during a special operation conducted by NDS forces. Hearing the news of his arrest, the residents of Kabul had called on the government to sentence him to death.

"Raees Khudaidad used to cut off body parts of abducted people to send them to their families in order receive ransom," NDS spokesman Hasib Sediqi said.

Khudaidad remained as one of the top most-wanted criminals in the NDS list for ten years, causing the security forces to expand their manhunt to different parts of the country.

"Following increase in organized crimes, the NDS drafted a comprehensive plan to counter organized crimes in which the arrest of Raees Khudaidad was the top priority," Sediqi said.

After the news of Khudaidad's execution circulated rapidly, the citizens praised the government for executing the dangerous mafia leader but urged the government to put an end to culture of impunity.

"We are standing behind the government and we welcome this act of government," a resident of Kabul named Mohammad Jan told TOLOnews reporter.

This has been the first execution warrant being ordered by the National Unity Government  (Tolo News).
