Security Forces Recapture Two Areas in Yamgan District

KABUL - Afghan security forces have recaptured two important areas of Yamgan district in north-eastern Badakhshan province which had fallen under the control of the Taliban two days ago.

The operation is ongoing however as security forces continue fighting off insurgents, said a ministry of defense official, Gen. Afzal Aman.

"The operation still continues in Yamgan and the military's special forces were also involved in this operation and soon they will re-take control of the district," he said.

However, officials did not provide details about any casualties.

On Saturday, Taliban insurgents attacked the district and took control of it forcing security forces to carry out a tactical retreat so as to avoid civilian casualties. This came after security forces clashed for hours with the insurgents.

On Sunday, officials said that more troops had arrived from the capital of the province to support the local troops and that they were able to launch an offensive to re-take control of the district.

The attack took place when Taliban insurgents, including foreigners, stormed the district and started clashing with security forces early Saturday. (Tolonews)
