KABUL - Protesting teachers warned on Sunday to keep on their strike until they were given a written statement regarding acceptance of their legitimate demands.

The teachers of a number of schools in capital Kabul and provinces staged a protest 12 days ago and boycotted classes citing meager salaries with no privileges.

Humayun Pazhman, a teacher at Habibia High School who was speaking at the Mesharano Jirga hall on behalf of protesting teachers, said currently the teachers of 80 schools in Kabul and 21 provinces had observed boycott.

Six months earlier, the president ordered governors to specify land for 13,000 teachers in different provinces and forward to the Ministry of Education (MoE) for approval.

Also the president tasked a commission to examine employees’ problems and remove differences of privileges of teachers and other government officials. The commission was tasked to provide teachers long-term loan for construction of homes.

Humayun told the Mesharano Jirga that teachers’ demands were legitimate and their strike would continue until they received government assurances in written to resolve their problems.

Senate has already formed a commission to address issues of teaching community. Lailuma Ahmadi, head of the commission, said they had held a meeting with minister of education who promised to do everything in his authority to resolve teachers’ problems.

Chairman Senate Fazal Hadi Muslimyar stressed on resolution of teachers problems, but said it would not be possible to address every demand of the teachers. (Pajhwok)
